Defending champion Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil beat Filippo Volandri of Italy 6-2, 6-2 on Monday in the first round of the Movistar Open, the first clay-court tournament of the ATP season. Bellucci converted five break-point opportunities and looked impressive while improving to 38-24 in his career on clay.
