DTotD: Goalkeeper sent off 10 seconds after kick off

This is being called the fastest red card ever and it makes a good case. Just 10 seconds into Ebbsfleet United’s Conference South match against Farnborough, their goalkeeper, Preston Edwards, was shown a straight red for weakly tripping up an opposing player who got in the way of a terrible backpass (about 50 seconds into the video).

Having your first choice keeper sent off just 10 seconds into the match is bad enough, but it’s even worse when you don’t have a backup keeper on the bench. Which Ebbsfleet didn’t. So, Ebbsfleet’s 17-year-old attacking midfielder Tom Phipp came in as a makeshift goalkeeper and the side ended up losing 3-0. Which isn’t as awful as you might expect. It probably could have been worse.

So is it the fastest ever? Well, it seems to edge out Ze Carlos’ 12-second red card from a couple years ago. Still, I’m sure there’s someone somewhere who kicked an opponent in the chest the second the whistle blew. This really is a record Nigel De Jong should have, though.
