Defending champion Estudiantes opened the Argentina Clausura tournament on Friday with a 2-1 victory over Newell’s Old Boys. In the day’s other match, Velez Sarsfield drew 2-2 with Independiente. Gaston Fernandez scored in the 13th minute to give Estudiantes the lead, and Gabriel Mercado made it 2-0 in the 24th, chipping in from close range.
