So in an attempt to inject a bit more life and interest into these early season tournaments, and because we're both inveterate gamblers who are one bad card from being out on the streets, Shane Bacon and I are playing a golf version of a football suicide pool: We each pick one golfer per tournament and see how they do against each other, straight up. Victory over the other guy gets one point, victory in the tournament gets three points. And when we burn a golfer, he's done for the year. This week: match play!
Bacon: Do I want to do what I'm about to do? No. It's like a Duke undergrad penciling in North Carolina as their bracket winner. But occasionally you gotta do what you think is right, and I think, ARGHHHHHHHH, that Ian Poulter is going to win this thing again. Yep, that's me, finally losing the rest of my self dignity. Be ashamed, people, be very ashamed.
Busbee: Oh, they are, Tiger lover. Or is it Tiger hater? I can never keep track. Anyway, you're starting to surge here, so I need to counter with some heat. I pick Graeme McDowell to keep down the Tweetin' English Dandy, and since they're scheduled to meet up in the semifinals of the Hogan division, we should know by the weekend which way this worm is turning.
Last week: Well, it wasn't a spectacular showing by any means, but Bacon's boy Matt Kuchar's T35 was three strokes better than Busbee's Hunter Mahan pick at T55, so Bacon nets his second point in a row. The streak is on!
Overall record: Busbee 5, Bacon 2
Already used: Busbee: Ernie Els, Steve Stricker, Chad Campbell, Bill Haas, Nick Watney, Tim Clark, Hunter Mahan. Bacon: Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Marino, Ben Crane, Jhonattan Vegas, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar.
