Video: Most terrible call of the night in Red Wings/Senators game

Late in the third period on Wednesday night, the Detroit Red Wings had a 6-5
lead over the Ottawa Senators when Chris Campoli sent a shot in on Jimmy Howard
and Chris Neil frantically jabbed at the rebound. The puck crossed the goal
line, with Neil’s stick actually bringing it back under Howard. Fractions of a
second later, the whistle blew.

So it’s another "Intent To Blow" ruling in which the referee
has ended the play in his mind, right? Maybe not. According to referee Kevin Pollock and
the War Room in Toronto, the goal was waved off because "the puck was under the
goalie and then he was pushed into the net."

Take a look, and ask yourself what replay, exactly, these
guys were watching:

The
Red Wings won the game, 7-5,
with Johan Franzen netting five goals.

To the surprise of no one, Coach Cory Clouston of the Senators
disagreed with the call. Via
the Ottawa Citizen:

"We tied it up," Clouston said. "(Howard) never had it
covered. It was pretty obvious on the replay that he didn’t have it covered. It
clearly crossed the line.

"It’s very
frustrating for our guys. Our guys played hard. They did a lot of good things
out there."

If the call is that Howard had the puck under him and was
pushed into the net, it’s a terrible call because that didn’t happen. If the
call is that Pollock intended to blow the whistle before the puck crossed the
line, it’s a terrible call because the puck wasn’t frozen (Howard never had
control of it before it crossed the line). And if he lost sight of the puck …
well, isn’t that why we have a multitude of cameras pointed at the cage?

All that said: It is refreshing to see the Red Wings get the
benefit of one of these situations for once, as they’re usually the ones
getting screwed.
