Singh, who stands at 16-under, two shots back of the leaders when golf kicked off on Monday, had a chance to wait on Sunday and play the 18th Monday morning, but went ahead and teed off before the horn sounded.
He hit his drive by the fairway bunker, hit his second shot to just over 30-feet, and two-putted for par. A birdie there would have tightened things up, but Singh knew where he stood, and blamed his final 66 on the middle of his round, not on his decision to finish up on Sunday night.
I'm really disappointed in the score, bogeying 9 and 10 after a good first eight holes," Singh said. "I've got no chance. They're going to come back tomorrow, and I think the leaders have two par-5s to go and (the driveable par-4) 17, and they're good enough players."
The answer was blunt, but it's true. Singh gave himself a chance in his final round by posting a score, but 16-under was never going to win this event (and 17-under probably won't either).
Critics of Singh might look back at his decision to finish up on Sunday instead of waiting until Monday, but as a golfer that has played in events before, I'd much rather finish up when I'm hot (he just birdied the 17th) then go home, have to sleep with the hole in my mind, and then come out cold on Sunday and hit a tee shot over water.
It was the right move, and although Singh most likely won't be at the top of this leaderboard when it finally finishes, he has to be happy to finally be back in the hunt of an event again.
