Wednesday’s Three Stars: Purcell’s first trick; Marleau’s late heroics

No. 1 Star: Teddy Purcell, Tampa Bay Lightning

A five-goal first period boosted the Lightning to an 8-3 rout of the Phoenix Coyotes, ending their eight-game win streak in the process. Purcell recorded his first career hat trick by opening the scoring in the first period and then potting home back-to-back goals six minutes apart early in the second. Vincent Lecavalier registered a goal and four assists, while Martin St. Louis tallied a pair in the win.

No. 2 Star: Bobby Butler, Ottawa Senators

Butler scored twice and Craig Anderson won his second straight start for the Senators making 23 saves as Ottawa got by the Florida Panthers, 5-1. Butler’s pair now give him five in his last five games after opening his NHL career without a goal in his first nine games. Jason Spezza added three points as the Senators ended a 10-game losing streak at ScotiaBank Place.

No. 3 Star: Devan Dubnyk, Edmonton Oilers

Dubnyk faced double-digit shots in all three periods and allowed just one to get by him as the Oilers took care of the Colorado Avalanche, 5-1. Making 38 saves, Dubnyk earned his eighth win of the year and won back-to-back appearances for the second time this season. Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall each had a goal and assist in the win.

Honorable mention: Willie Mitchell’s goal 6:45 into the third period broke a 2-2 tie as the Los Angeles Kings edged the Anaheim Ducks, 3-2. Jonathan Quick made 25 saves and won for the eighth time in 10 starts … Teemu Selanne scored his 626th goal to pass Joe Sakic for 14th all-time on the NHL scoring list … In front of new owner Terry Pegula, Tyler Mylers scored, added an assist and finished a plus-3 as the Buffalo Sabres downed the Atlanta Thrashers, 4-1. Ryan Miller made 40 saves to snap a three-game losing streak. Sabres defenseman Steve Montador played in his 500th NHL game … Patrick Marleau scored his second goal of the evening with four seconds to go in overtime as the San Jose Sharks beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2. Antti Niemi won his fifth straight and Logan Couture scored his 25th of the season, tying a San Jose franchise rookie record as well as Michael Grabner in the rookie scoring race. Three games after notching the OT winner against Nashville, Marleau recorded his sixth game-winner of the year:

Did you know? Shane Doan played in his 1,099th NHL game to pass Teppo Numminen for the Winnipeg-Phoenix franchise all-time games played record.

Dishonorable mention: Jason LaBarbera was in net for all eight Tampa Bay goals … Tobias Enstrom and Dustin Byfuglien finished a combined minus-7 against Buffalo … Atlanta fell to 3-11-4 in their last 18 games … For the second straight game, the lights at CONSOL Energy Center caused a delay. The start of the second period of the Penguins/Sharks game was delayed by 20 minutes after the house lights failed to turn on … Already missing 10 regulars, Brooks Orpik took a puck to the hand in the second period and did not return … Making his first start for the Avs, Brian Elliott allowed five goals on 31 shots.
