Video: Backstrom’s superb scrambling stick save against Blackhawks

In the first period of their 4-2 victory at the Chicago
Blackhawks
, Minnesota Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom was taken out by his own
teammate Andrew Brunette while making a save on Jonathan Toews.

The Chicago captain then collected the puck behind the net and
fed teammate Troy Brouwer for what should have been a layup of a backhand goal
into a vacated next.

That was until Backstrom dove across the crease and
deflected the shot with his paddle:

Backstrom had 30 other pretty good saves in the win, and is
now 2-1 since returning from a hip injury. Said
the Star Tribune:
"You’d need both hands and perhaps a foot or two to count
the sterling saves he made."

He had a bit of help too, according
to Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times:

The Hawks mounted a rally in the third period but had trouble
beating Niklas Backstrom (31 saves). Jonathan Toews had an apparent goal with
4:33 left in the third period waved off after the officials ruled the play was
whistled dead, even though replays clearly showed the puck had crossed the goal
line when ex-Hawk John Madden knocked it in.

The Wild have now won four of five games heading into the
All-Star break.
