Monday’s Three Stars: Flames destroy Avs; Luongo’s gaffe

No. 1 Star: Olli
Jokinen
,
Calgary Flames

Jokinen was the catalyst for this Valentine’s Day Massacre,
scoring four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in the first period to power the Flames’ 9-1
trouncing
of the Colorado Avalanche. He had helpers on goals by David Moss,
Anton Babchuk and Curtis Glencross, and scored his 12th of the season for the
Flames’ fifth goal of the frame. At the end of the period, he was hit
knee-on-knee by Philippe Dupuis and was out of the game by the third period. Even cut short, it was an impressive night for Jokinen.

No. 2 Star: Ilya
Bryzgalov
,
Phoenix Coyotes

The Coyotes netminder made 29 saves, including several key
ones as the Capitals went 0-for-5 on the power play, helping Phoenix defeat the
Washington Capitals, 3-2.
 It was Byzgalov’s fifth
straight win.

No. 3 Star: Alex Pietrangelo, St. Louis Blues

The Blues defender led his team with 22:52 in ice time and
had two assists as St. Louis defeated the Vancouver Canucks, 3-2. He created the
game-winner on the power play by skating deep into the zone and dishing across
the crease to Patrik Berglund.

Honorable mention: Ray Whitney scored
a critical second period goal on the power play to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead,
having earlier assisted on Martin Hanzal’s 12th of the season. Vernon Fiddler
added an insurance goal in the third. … Henrik Sedin scored his 13th for the
Canucks. … David Moss had a 4-point night for the Flames
(1 goal, 3 assists), while Curtis Glencross had 2 goals and an assist. … Jay
Bouwmeester
,
Glencross, Jarome Iginla and Robin Regehr were all plus-4. … Matt Bradley had a key goal for the Capitals in the third.

Did you know? This was the first time in team (but not franchise) history the Avalanche have given up
nine goals.

Dishonorable
mention:
John-Michael Liles was a minus-6 against the Flames. Kevin Porter
and Kevin Shattenkirk were both minus-4. …. A defensive gaffe by John Erskine
led to Phoenix’s third goal. … Dupuis’s
knee-on-knee hit
might draw a suspension. … Peter Budaj was pulled for
Craig Anderson, who was pulled for Peter Budaj, who was pulled for Craig
Anderson. … Matt Duchene left the game in the second period with an left arm
injury. … Andrew
Alberts broke his wrist
in the second period for the Canucks. … Finally, someone
